Mally Roncal has made her dream job and passion for beauty into reality and success. She works with high profile clients such as Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Ashlee Simpson and has been featured on Oprah and The Today Show... but she hasn’t stopped there! Mally also introduced mally Beauty, a makeup line “for women who want to look gorgeous in 5 minutes or less.” We asked Mally what they key to her success is in an exclusive YBI interview...
YBI: How did you start your career as a Makeup Artist?
Mally: I was pre-med in college because I wanted to become a dermatologist because I loved skin! But I quickly realized that I couldn’t deny my love for beauty and makeup. I began doing little jobs with anyone who would hire me. I didn’t say no to anyone! Gradually I began to get busier, at that time I got an agent and that was when everything took off.
YBI: Do you remember the exact point when you knew your career was really going to take off? What was that like?
Mally: Yes! I was in a cab and we pulled up next to a bus and when I looked out the window, I saw a photo that I had done for a magazine. It was huge and it was on the side of the bus! I got so excited and I screamed so loud that I scared the hell out of the cab driver. I realized how much I loved the feeling of seeing my work, especially so large on the side of a bus. At that point I knew I wouldn’t stop until I was completely satisfied with my work.
YBI: What do you think separates you from other Makeup Artists? (What do you do to attract high profile clients?)
Mally: Maybe it’s my love for women and the positive energy that I share with them. There are so many incredibly talented makeup artists but maybe when I know when a client meets me she feels my love that I have for making women beautiful.
YBI: What inspired you to create your own makeup line?
Mally: I wanted to make a makeup line that was fabulous but easy to use and achieve the look that is just right. Makeup that was professional quality that gave professional results but it could be done in a snap. After all, we’re all super women and we deserve only the very best.
YBI: What’s the one Mally Beauty product that you think every woman should have?
Mally: mally BEAUTY Smokey Eye Kit!!! Because it can take you from day to evening and It make applying a smokey eye super easy. Everyone deserves to look like a superstar!
YBI: What’s your advice for Professional Makeup Artists trying to succeed in the freelance world?
Mally: Always remember that you’re a business person. Many times, you as artist get caught up in the whole “artist thing” but you can’t ever forget that this is your profession and your business. Treat it with respect. Also, treat everyone with kindness, people will remember how great you were on the shoot and they will call you back again.
