On Friday Beyonce attended the opening of her cosmetology school at the Phoenix House Career Academy in Brooklyn, New York.
The Beyonce Cosmetology Center will help men and women in treatment for substance dependencies at the Phoenix House prepare for careers in cosmetology with a seven-month training course.
Beyoncé Knowles and her mother Tina spoke at the ceremony in Brooklyn on March 5th to unveil the new cosmetology school, a project that has been in the works for a few years. They also pledged an annual donation of $100,000 to the program that will train residents for a future in the professional beauty industry.
Phoenix House is a nonprofit recovery center for people with drug and alcohol dependencies. It has centers in ten states with over 50 locations. The
program provides vocational training with courses in carpentry, building maintenance, computer technology and culinary arts to prepare residents for a life after the program.
Beyoncé spoke of her memories of a salon that her mother once owned and operated in Houston, TX, calling it "a place for women to socialize, share stories, cry, laugh and get advice." The cosmetology program is a 7-month cosmetology training course for adult men and women. L'Oreal is donating products to the cosmetology training center. (Beyoncé has been a spokeswoman for L'Oréal.)
