BLOG: Behind the Scenes at BFW ‘12
By Christina Mirabella

As the Summer comes to a close, it usually means 2 things are coming up inevitably soon; 1) fun, and festive fall activities, and 2) arguably the best time of the year for FASHION! This year, the Your Beauty Industry team of talented makeup artists were lucky enough once again to be backstage in the heart of the action in Boston. Led by Kara Kamrowski and Amalia Gallo, our team successfully executed some beautiful looks for some super talented designers.

First on the agenda, was the Luke Aaron Show. The makeup for this show called for a light and natural look. With a matte, and fresh face, a nude, glossy lip, and some serious inner eye highlighting, models looked youthful, refreshed, and completely embodied the essence of Aaron’s pieces.

Following the Luke Aaron show, the YBI team, consisting of: Amalia Gallo, Kara Kamrowski, Brittany Patenaude, Maureen McDonough Jamal, Christin Indrisano and Christina Mirabella, began prepping the models for the Victoria Dominguez-Bagu show. For the show, Victoria requested that her models wear a gold shimmer shadow on lids, with some smoked out black eye liner. Towards the outer corner of the eye, a darker more bronze shadow was used to create some definition to the eye. Keeping with the trend of light, natural, faces we had seen earlier in the day, we applied a natural blush, and a nude lip. It was the perfect look for Victoria’s line of modern day-to-evening dresses.

One of the most beneficial shows for up-and-coming designers is “The Launch.” It features recent graduates of various, well respected design programs. This year the launch designers were: Tatiana Cuevo of School of Fashion Design, Danielle Fernandes of Mount Ida College, Achk Kombana of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Rei Hyun Lee of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and Jennifer Miller  of the School of Fashion Design. The look for The Launch was a soft, smoky, brown eye. The browns that we used were a cool, almost grayish brown for the lid, and a slightly darker shade was applied to the crease of the eye. Brown liner on top and bottom, slightly smoked out, a natural face with a slight “flush” appearance, and a natural pink lip rounded out the look.

As one of the more modern and edgy makeup looks we saw at BFW, designer Mark Cordell’s 12 male and 1 female models were made up to have a “joker-like” inspired look on half of their face. On the side of the face that was left natural, we slightly contoured the cheek bone using bronzer. The other side of the face consisted of a black, smoked out, eye. Black shadow was applied from lid to brow and smoked out on the edges, to create a “smoggy” texture.  Half of the lip was winged out into a “cat-lip” (similar to the ever popular cat-eye) using black liner and face makeup. Hair for this show varied from model to model, but was definitely the most edgy, complete with braids, Mohawks, and serious angular parts on the longer haired models.
